  • Overview

Australia is one of the most ethnoculturally diverse societies in the Western world, requiring healthcare providers to interact with patients from a diverse range of backgrounds to their own. Delivering cross-cultural pain management presents challenges of communication, discordant beliefs and often opposing preferences for treatment. Such challenges contribute to the lower rates of attendance, acceptance and premature drop-out from treatment observed among some culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities undergoing pain management. This eTalk explores how ethnoculture and social positioning influence the experience of chronic pain and discusses implications for physiotherapy education and management. This eTalk has been recorded to support the Australian physiotherapy community understand how pain management changes depending on different groups in society, in line with 2019 being the IASP’s international year against pain in vulnerable populations
