For most physiotherapists, it is understood when faced with a presentation of chronic pain in the physiotherapy clinic, use of a biopsychosocial model of care is “best practice”. For many physiotherapists one of the challenges with chronic pain is finding a way to disconnect pain sufferers from mechanical treatment styles and to engage them more fully in an interoceptive understanding of their suffering. Integrative Acupuncture, with its roots in eastern philosophies of health and wellbeing is a systems based approach supported by neuroscience. In this lecture, Sue George argues that these two approaches have more similarities than differences and should be used where needed as one.
