This course follows on, and extends the learning, from the Mental Health First Aid course.
Mental Health Physiotherapy Level 1 aims to improve your knowledge and skills in the identification and understanding of common mental health problems. It looks at the role of physiotherapy in relation to patients experiencing mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the higher prevalence of certain mental health problems across the lifespan, the impact of risk and protective factors and the role of physiotherapy in a range of clinical settings.
- Explore the more common mental health diagnoses of anxiety and depression and develop an understanding of the pathophysiology underlying signs and symptoms and effectiveness of a range of interventions including pharmacology.
- Explore Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and psychotic illnesses and develop an understanding of the impact of these conditions on quality of life as well as physiotherapy engagement and management.
- Develop an understanding of the assessment tools for mental health including how to interpret results to guide physiotherapy.
- Apply management strategies to a range of clinical case studies where people may be developing or experiencing mental health problems.

Pre-requisites
The recommended pre-requisite is Mental Health First Aid.
The Mental Health Physiotherapy Level 1 course builds on the following assumed knowledge:
- What is mental health?
- Mental Health First Aid for people who are developing a mental health problem:
- Signs and symptoms of depression
- Signs and symptoms of anxiety
- Risk factors for developing mental health problems including anxiety or depression
- Interventions for anxiety or depressive disorders/problems
- Mental Health First Aid plans for anxiety problems or depression.
- Mental Health First Aid for people who are in mental health crisis:
- First aid for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours, including the three key actions.
- First aid for panic attacks
- First aid following a traumatic event
