Bladder and bowel dysfunction is common following a neurological event and can significantly impact quality of life.
This lecture will provide an overview of the pathophysiology of bladder and bowel dysfunction in the neurological population and the role physiotherapist have in investigating and managing this dysfunction for this population.
Wendy Bower, Assoc Prof and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapy, is a clinician and researcher with specific interest in nocturnal bladder dysfunction who has contributed significantly to understanding of lower urinary tract symptoms in both children and older adults. She is an invited member of the Nocturnal Polyuria Research group, the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Group and a member of the International Consultation on Incontinence Frail Older People committee. Assoc Professor Bower is an Associate Editor for the journal Neurourology and Urodynamics, a member of the Editorial committee of the Australia New Zealand Continence Journal and a peer reviewer for 15 international scientific journals. She has held executive positions with The Continence Foundation of Australia, Australian Association of Gerontology, International Continence Society and the International Children’s Continence Society. Prof Bower currently holds appointments at The University of Melbourne, Ghent University in Belgium and The Royal Melbourne Hospital where she works as a Continence Physiotherapist and also Clinical Research leader in Physiotherapy. Wendy has authored over 70 peer reviewed publication and 14 book chapters.
