  • Overview

OPEN (Online Pain Education Network) is an evidence-based online training program designed to transform how healthcare professionals understand and treat chronic pain.

For the first time, the OPEN course provides an opportunity for all healthcare professionals to learn the same shared core knowledge and skills for helping people living with pain to manage their pain without relying on medication alone. There are four awards available, each focusing on a different aspect of pain management. Complete all 4 awards to receive an OPEN certificate of completion in the OPEN Clinical Pain Management Training program — all included for a one-time cost of $280. (Payment is made through OPEN's website)

Award 1 - Essential Pain Management

Lays the foundations required for healthcare professionals to be able to recognise and assess the pain experienced by people seeking help with their pain, as well as to develop a pain management plan with the person in pain. They will learn to understand pain as a multidimensional experience that is unique to the individual in pain and to understand that each person in pain will be affected in different ways and have their own pain care priorities, thereby providing the basis for an individualised, or person-centred, approach to pain management.

Award 2 - Preparing for Pain Self-Management

Equips healthcare professionals with the skills to introduce the benefits of pain self-management to a person seeking help with their pain and to prepare them for this approach. The ways in which different healthcare professionals can work in an integrated manner with a person in pain to develop a self-management approach are also explored.

Award 3 - Core Pain Self-Management skills

Guides healthcare professionals through ways in which they can develop their clinical skills in teaching a person in pain how they can identify personally relevant treatment goals, pace their daily activities and exercise programs, apply relaxation methods for reducing stress and tension, and effective problem-management strategies.

Award 4 - Safe and effective use of medication

As most people in pain are likely to use medication for their pain, this award provides prescribers and non-prescribers guidance on ways in which pharmacological and self-management strategies can be used in an integrated way to safely achieve optimal and safe outcomes.
