This lecture will review the recent introduction of augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in the treatment of phantom limb pain in upper and lower limb amputees. It will include a review of the biological aetiology of phantom limb pain and demonstration of this technology.

Presenter

Chris Weiers (MScMed (PainMgt), B Physio (Hons), Dip Leadership & Mgmt, MAPA) is a titled Pain Physiotherapist and the deputy manager of physiotherapy at Epworth Rehabilitation Richmond. He is a guest lecturer at La Trobe University in Melbourne and self-professed technology geek with over 10 years’ experience in treating persistent pain in Canada, the UK and Australia. Chris has a particular interest in the influence of behavioural therapy in the management of persistent pain, complex regional pain syndrome and amputee pain. In 2017, Chris was co-awarded the Baxter Health Scholarship to investigate the utilisation of virtual and augmented reality technology in the reduction of phantom limb pain.
