This lecture series event presented by an expert level of presenters to further develop a clinician's knowledge about less common neurological conditions and provide practical management strategies to perform with patients. This symposium has been created to be aimed at a level 2 clinician however will be beneficial for all therapists working with people who have neurological conditions. Each topic will address a brief overview of pathophysiology, current evidence, case study and Q&A.

Presenters

Melissa McConaghy is a clinician, educator, author, entrepreneur and thought leader. She is a Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Academically, she also holds a Master of Health Science (Neurological Physiotherapy) and Grad Certificate in Public Health. Melissa has previously chaired the Neurology Chapter in NSW and was the NSW National Representative for the Australian Physiotherapy Association. She is currently sits on the Executive Committee of INPA, part of the World Congress of Physical Therapy. Melissa has a broad experience in community neuro rehabilitation and is director of both Advance Rehab Centre, a neurological outpatient and home based rehab facility and PD Warrior, an exercise approach for people with Parkinson’s that is licensed in 10 countries.  As a thought leader, Melissa has led the way creating exercise programs incorporating intensive neuroplasticity training principles for people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, stroke and brain injury.

 

Katrina Williams  BPhty; MApSc-Phys; GCHEdu; FACP (2008) is a specialist Neurological Physiotherapist FACP 2008 (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapy). She has worked extensively in the fields of neurological and vestibular rehabilitation for over 20 years. Katrina is a full-time Clinical Academic at the University of Queensland and runs a private practice, Upright Physiotherapy and professional Education Group called Neurological Ageing and Vestibular Education – NAVE. She is the course co-ordinator for the Neurological stream at UQ and 4th year Clinical co-ordinator. Katrina is currently completing her PhD exploring sensory and vestibular symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis and their influence on movement. Other research interests include understanding the impact of dizziness on balance and function in migraines, concussion, patients with neck pain and exploring biomechanics in movement disorders to better understand and evaluate treatment options. Recently she was successful in obtaining funding to develop the first vestibular and balance testing research facility in a Queensland University, including a Rotary Chair. This will provide the opportunity for more advanced testing and interpretive research for the dizzy and imbalanced patient and people with movement disorders.
