A panel presentation to discuss the introduction of the Australian National Aged Care Classification (AN-ACC) Funding Assessment and opportunities for new models physiotherapy service provision in residential aged care settings.

Dr Jennie Hewitt will speak to the facilitation of the Sunbeam program and how to promote physio led exercise in Residential Aged Care Facilities.

Hannah Sharma our Victoria group chair will present on implementation of High Intensity Functional Exercise (HIFE) program - an evidence-based and cost-effective exercise program.

Scott Lynch will inspire us to re-think Physiotherapy business models.

 

Presenters

Jennie Hewitt, APAM, PhD, is a practicing physiotherapist, educator, and academic researcher with a passion for delivering best practice and leading research that informs health care policy. Jennie was awarded the Aged and Community Services Australia, National Lifetime Achievement Award, and a National Commendation for Better Practice, from the Aged Care Quality Agency, for her work on the Sunbeam Program in residential care. In 2019 she won the Morley Award for the paper most likely to influence policy and practice from the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association. Her work has been used successfully to advocate for Australian Aged Care Funding Reform, she was invited to give evidence on the role of physiotherapists in aged care at the Royal Commission. Jennie is currently working as technical advisor to the Commonwealth Chief Allied Health Officer on an implementation plan to translate her exercise program to practice in 11 Primary Health Networks and 119 aged care facilities. Evaluation of this program will inform future health policy.

Hannah Sharma, APAM, has been working as a physiotherapist in sub-acute inpatient public health settings for over 14 years. Recently, Hannah completed her Masters in Clinical Education at the University of Melbourne. She is involved in sessional tutoring within the Gerontology modules at The University of Melbourne and Swinburne University. Besides this, Hannah chairs the APA VIC gerontology committee and is an assessor for the Australian Physiotherapy council. Her current research project is exploring experiences and perceptions of gerontological physiotherapy clinical supervisors of teaching clinical reasoning.

Scott Lynch, APAM, is founder & director of Community Therapy. Scott is a Physiotherapist and Director of Community Therapy, a multidisciplinary mobile allied health company supporting people living across the Central Coast and Hunter New England health districts of NSW. Community Therapy has a strong focus on clinical excellence and regional healthcare. Scott graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor's of Physiotherapy in 2010.
