Pelvic health physiotherapy remains largely grounded in cisnormative and gendered models of care, creating barriers for LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly in a speciality that involves sensitive discussion of bowel, bladder, sexual function, and examination of the pelvis. This session explores how inclusive care principles translate into pelvic health practice. Attendees will examine the unique pelvic health needs of LGBTQIA+ communities, alongside gaps in clinician training that impact access, safety, and outcomes - for all patients, not only those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Through a trauma-informed, patient-centred lens, participants will learn practical strategies for inclusive subjective interviewing, affirming language use, and collaborative decision making around examination and intervention. Emphasis will be placed on flexible, patient-led approaches that prioritize autonomy, consent, and psychological safety. Clinicians will leave with actionable tools to challenge normative assumptions, foster trust, and improve pelvic health outcomes for all patients, including those in LGBTQIA+ communities.
