  • Overview

Intra-articular temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prevalent group of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the jaw joint complex and surrounding structures. As first-contact practitioners, it is important to understand what limitations, restrictions and impairments are commonly associated with intra-articular TMDs to inform assessment and subsequent treatment. This lecture delves into recent findings from a number of studies which explored the lived experiences and local musculoskeletal function (range of motion, muscle function, proprioception) of individuals with intra-articular TMDs presenting for care.

Presenter

Alana Dinsdale, APAM, is an experienced clinical physiotherapist, researcher and lecturer at The University of Queensland. She has a strong clinical background in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, with a particular interest in the assessment and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

In 2019, Alana undertook a PhD investigating disability associated with persistent intra-articular temporomandibular disorders in adults. She has an increasing national and international research profile in TMD and has achieved numerous high-quality research outputs including publication of her research in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at local and national conferences.

Alana is an active member of the UQ Neck and Head Research Unit, the Australian Physiotherapy Association and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Orofacial Pain. She teaches TMD content to undergraduate and graduate-entry masters students at UQ, and continues to practice clinically as a physiotherapist in Brisbane.
