Orthopaedic Oncology specialist Dr. Martin Lowe discusses the presentation and surgical management of sarcoma. Following this, Shea Byrne, Ortho-Oncology Therapies Lead at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the UK, will discuss the role of physiotherapy in the pre- and post-operative care of this patient cohort.

Presenters

Dr Martin Lowe, was born and raised in Brisbane and graduated from the University of Queensland School of Medicine in 2007. He completed his Orthopaedic Fellowship in 2017. Following this he undertook a fellowship at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom, under the direct tutelage of world renown surgeon Professor Lee Jeys. During his time in this centre of excellence for Orthopaedic Oncology and Arthroplasty, Dr. Lowe gained extensive experience in the surgical management of both adult and paediatric sarcomas using 3-Dimensional intra-operative computer navigation as well as managing complex primary and revision joint replacement of the hip and knee. He also worked within the West Midlands Bone and Joint Infection Unit and acquired many unique and innovative surgical skills in managing joint infections. Dr. Lowe is an active participant in multiple research projects both locally and internationally and has presented at multiple international scientific meetings both in the field of oncology and joint replacement. Dr. Lowe has dual staff specialist appointments at both the Queensland Childrens’ Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He consults and operates at the Wesley Hospital.

Shea Byrne, is the Ortho-Oncology Therapies Lead and a physiotherapist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in London—the largest sarcoma surgical centre in Europe, and ranked the #1 orthopaedic hospital in the UK and #9 globally. Shea graduated from Charles Sturt University and completed her clinical rotations at Western Health in Melbourne. She then moved to London, working across amputee care, trauma, and orthopaedics before specialising in Ortho-Oncology at RNOH. After three years, she returned to Melbourne to join the Ortho-Oncology team at St Vincent’s Hospital, before returning to RNOH to take on the Therapies Lead role, which she has held since 2022. Shea has delivered both poster and podium presentations at the British Sarcoma Group (BSG), British Orthopaedic Oncology Society (BOOS), International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS), and the European Musculo-Skeletal Oncology Society (EMSOS). She has also led educational sessions for hospital therapy staff across the UK, Europe, and Hong Kong, and developed a complex orthopaedic module for undergraduate physiotherapy students at London Metropolitan University.
