Stress has continually been reported to be influenced by higher educational demands within pre-qualifying physiotherapy programs, post-qualification and during periods of specialisation.  Stress is also affected by external factors including relationships, relocation and financial pressures. 

 

When individuals perceive that they are unable to cope with stressful demands in life, the impacts of the stressors may manifest as burnout.

 

This eTalk:

  • Illustrates the causes of stress and explore why not all stress is bad,
  • Highlights the impact of stress on the human body
  • Differentiates between stress and anxiety,
  • Explores emotional responses to change,
  • Examines five essential ingredients for successfully navigating change/transitional periods (studying/placements/post-graduation/career progression)
  • Develops strategies to manage stress and mitigate burnout

 

Presenters

 

Dr Suzanne Gough, APAM, is an Associate Professor of Physiotherapy and Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at Bond University, Australia. Suzanne transitioned from clinical practice to a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2004. Her PhD explored the use of simulation-based education in cardio-respiratory physiotherapy, including error recognition, decision making and patient safety.  Suzanne has let international teams which have developed evidence-based resources for Simulated Patient Programmes and multi-professional patient safety curricular. Her research interests include curriculum development featuring simulation and technology enhanced learning, managing stress and mitigating burnout, and exploring professional identity formation.

 

Associate Professor Rob Orr, APAM, PhD, served in the Australian Army for over 23 years as an infantry solider, physical training instructor, uniformed physiotherapist and human performance officer. Still serving in the Army Reserve, Dr Orr is the Director of the Tactical Research Unit at Bond University, teaching into the Doctor of Physiotherapy program and supervises masters and doctoral students going research in tactical populations.  Providing research, consultancy and educational services for law enforcement, military and firefighter agencies across 5 continents, Rob’s interests span initial training through to the selection and training of specialist personnel, with a particular passion for tactical load carriage. Through over 200 published research papers and technical reports in tactical population, Dr Orr’s focus is on providing pragmatic research evidence to the tactical community.
