Physiotherapists are involved in care, management and rehabilitation of cancer patients from diagnosis to the end of life, across all settings. This lecture aims to provide a well-rounded introduction of oncology, the implications of cancer for your patients, including the basics of cancer diagnosis and staging, cancer treatment, symptoms, current evidence based guidelines and the role of physiotherapists in identifying goals and management strategies such as exercise. There will be time for Q and A and resources for further upskilling, professional development and networking will also be shared.

 

Presenters

Amy Bowman, APAM, is a senior oncology physiotherapist, acting physiotherapy education lead and allied health clinical informatics officer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre with experience working across the cancer control continuum from prehab to palliative care. She is a MPhil candidate at the University of Melbourne, conducting research focused on evaluating and optimising delivery of exercise service for people with lung cancer.

Germaine Tan, MACP, is an APA titled Cancer Physiotherapist and the current National Chair of the APA Cancer, Palliative Care & Lymphoedema Group. She was awarded an NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship in 2023 and is a PhD candidate at La Trobe University and Eastern Health, Melbourne, Australia, investigating the impact of timing of cancer rehabilitation services on patient health and health service outcomes. Germaine has over 15 years of clinical and research experience in cancer care across major metropolitan public hospital and community health settings in Australia and Singapore and has delivered cancer rehabilitation training programs to allied health professionals.
