This lecture will provide a unique insight into the challenges and joys of providing paediatric physiotherapy within rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander communities. It will also discuss the important role Physiotherapists can play in advocating for and providing improved Indigenous health care through the Close the Gap campaign. Chris Wilson, FACP Specialist Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist, Australian College of Physiotherapy is a physiotherapist with over 40 years experience in paediatrics, and has been heavily involved in Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Clinics in Queensland. Kathryn Potter, a physiotherapist with over 12 years of clinical experience and proud Indigenous woman, has provided representation on a number of committees to support Indigenous health.
Kathryn Potter is a Kamilaroi woman and an Advanced Physiotherapist who has worked in the Hospital and Health Service for 15 years, practicing as a Physiotherapist for 12 of those and as a Physiotherapy Indigenous Cadet for 3. She is currently working part time in a research facilitation role within the Women’s, Men’s and Pelvic Health service at Logan Hospital. Kathryn has a special interest in both Women's, Men's and Pelvic health and Respiratory health and is a member of both APA special groups. She is also the founder and Managing Director of the Indigenous owned company named Physiotherapy Innovations.
Jo Costello has been a midwife for over 32 years, working in a variety of settings in the UK, US and now in Australia for the past 12 years. My inspiration is the strength I see in the women and families we care for every day and my passion is to provide all women with individualised high quality care throughout their journey.
Christine Wilson, FACP is a Specialist Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists, 2010). Christine Wilson works as Consultant Physiotherapist for non-acute physiotherapy services at Queensland Children’s Hospital, and previously at RCH Brisbane. Honorary adjunct appointments include Assistant Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University, Gold Coast Qld; and Adjunct Senior Lecturer, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Griffith University, Gold Coast Qld. Chris has been an active member of the APA since 1976 and participates in cardiorespiratory and paediatric national groups. Chris has worked extensively with clinical, research, and educational roles particularly in paediatric cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and airway malacia. Pioneering physiotherapy services in the Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Care (IROC) program, Chris has provided clinical services, teaching and resources throughout remote and regional Queensland.
