In this e-Talk, Melissa McConaghy will discuss the Running an effective exercise program involves a considered approach to improving engagement, self-efficacy and long-term behaviour change. This presentation will focus on practical ideas drawn from health coaching literature, and learnings acquired from clinical practice and development of over 10 effective exercise programs, one of which has now been rolled out globally in four countries and treating thousands of people in more than 10 countries. Although drawn from neurological rehab experience, this talk will appeal to any practitioner developing or updating an existing exercise program, regardless of their special interest area.

 

Presenter

Melissa McConaghy is a Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists. She holds a Master of Health Science in Neurological Physiotherapy and is past chair of the NSW Neurology Chapter. With a passion for community based rehabilitation, Melissa has developed and coordinated over 10 innovative exercise programs in her role as director and owner of Advance Rehab Centre, a specialist neurological outpatient centre in Sydney. The exercise programs treat various conditions and are delivered in various formats such as 2-week boot camps, 6 week intensives, 10 week challenges, ongoing maintenance and home based programs. One of the most successful programs, PD Warrior, an early intervention program for Parkinson’s, has since been rolled out in four countries and has an accompanying book that melissa has authored called The New Parkinson’s Treatment: Exercise is Medicine.
