This is a lecture on Exercise, Sports and Participation in the NDIA context. In this lecture we will discuss guidelines around exercise and factors influencing participation. The current literature around exercise and sports as well as participation as an intervention strategy. We will also discuss practical tips, goal setting and ideas to include in your therapy sessions to improve physical activity levels in the community and support sports participation for your clients.

Presenters

Louise Daniels, APAM is a senior Physiotherapist at Kids Plus Foundation. She has worked in paediatrics, predominantly in the community, for more than 15 years and completed her Masters of Paediatric Physiotherapy in 2013. Louise qualified as a Bobath practitioner in 2014. Her more recent focus has been on supporting children with a disability to be able to participate in sporting activities within their local environments. Louise also started and continues to develop the Kids Plus Sport and Rec’ Program. She collaborates with families, therapists and community organisations to support children in reaching their individual sports participation goals.

Georgia McKenzie is a PhD candidate with La Trobe University and CP-Achieve (https://www.cp-achieve.org.au/) and an associate investigator on the VicHealth funded GYM-SPARC research project. She currently works as a physiotherapist in the Young Adult Complex Disability Service at St Vincent’s Hospital. Her PhD work focusses on identifying factors influencing community gym participation for adults with cerebral palsy and developing strategies to improve participation. She will present on findings from the FitSkills NHMRC research project which evaluated the feasibility, acceptability and experiences of community gym exercise for young people with disability.
