  • Overview

Rebecca and Chris discuss the behavioural influences impacting the integration of oncology exercise into care, review the CHALLENGE trial and reflect upon the role of behaviour change in its success, and explore real world examples of oncology exercise implementation (a 25 to 75% increase in oncology rehabilitation adoption was seen by strengthening communication channels within a co-located exercise service). This session aims to drive discussion on how we can optimise existing exercise pathways and create new ones with early behaviour change at point of referral.

Presenter

Dr Rebecca Phillips, MACP, is a Titled Research Physiotherapist and member of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, with 30 years of clinical experience guiding implementation research. Rebecca works as an Academic after completing her PhD in 2025, applying the COM-B behaviour-change theoretical framework to identify mechanisms optimising patient adherence to physiotherapist-delivered exercise rehabilitation.

Christopher McHardy is a new graduate MSK physiotherapist, with a 15 year career in storytelling and video production. His Honours research presented at COSA 2024 explored embedding behaviour change discussion within oncology exercise referral with the use of a co-designed exercise referral form. 40 healthcare professional interviews were performed and qualitatively analysed deeming acceptance and feasibility of the approach.
