This lecture will explore the unique experiences and needs of individuals who are both neurodivergent and part of the LGBTQIA+.

 

Co-facilitated by a physiotherapist and psychologist, the session will discuss how overlapping aspects of neurodivergence and queer identity can shape interactions with allied health, and will highlight strategies for providing safe and inclusive care for this specific population group.

 

Presenters

Kate Gallo, APAM, (she/they) is a queer and neurodivergent physiotherapist working in a multidisciplinary clinic on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Kate works primarily with an NDIS and private caseload, supporting clients through exercise-based interventions. She has an interest in supporting neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ patients, as well as clients with neurological conditions, to feel empowered through exercise, and using a collaborative and holistic approach to best support each individual's needs. Kate is passionate about working with other queer-affirming practitioners in the local community to improve healthcare outcomes for LGBTQIA+ people. She is a current member of the APA LGBTQIA+ Committee and has contributed to lectures and content around LGBTQIA+-affirming physiotherapy.

 

Dr. Alexander Mach (he/him) is a clinical psychologist at The Identity Clinic, specializing in affirming care for LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent individuals. Dr. Mach was trained in the United States and is also currently registered as a provisional psychologist in Australia while completing a transitional program for overseas psychologists. He has worked both as a psychologist and as a trainer/consultant, helping health and mental health professionals enhance their knowledge and effectiveness in supporting LGBTQIA+ clients. Over the past four years, he has trained more than 1,000 professionals across various disciplines, focusing on strategies to improve providers' comfort and competency in delivering LGBTQIA+ affirming care. His consulting work also targets practical, actionable solutions to improve care access and outcomes for the LGBTQIA+ community. Dr. Mach is passionate about advancing the field and is excited to present to the APA, sharing his expertise in creating inclusive, supportive environments for all patients.
