  • Overview

Often in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy screening clinics, the clinician recommends referral for non-operative management. Patient beliefs such as “bone on bone” and fear of exercise causing harm, however, are a common barrier to engaging with non-operative management. In one off screening assessments, this can be challenging to address.

Please join us for this one-hour online presentation by Dr Samantha Bunzli providing an overview of the evidence regarding musculoskeletal pain beliefs and how these can be targeted to assist in engaging people with non-operative management.

 This session will:

  • Provide an overview of musculoskeletal pain beliefs
  • Discuss the influence of musculoskeletal pain beliefs on behaviour, treatment choices and outcomes
  • Discuss how clinicians can target unhelpful pain beliefs and facilitate behaviour change

Presenter

Dr Sam Bunzli is a physiotherapist who completed her PhD with Professors Peter O’Sullivan and Anne Smith at Curtin University. She is currently a research fellow at The University of Melbourne, Department of Surgery, within the Centre for Research Excellence in Total Joint Replacement. In her research, Sam uses qualitative methods to explore the beliefs, coping responses and treatment experiences of people with musculoskeletal pain and their clinicians. She is interested in how we can optimise clinical communication to promote helpful beliefs and coping responses, and improve outcomes for people experiencing musculoskeletal pain.
