  • Overview

In February 2024, the AIS, in consultation with SMA, the ACSEP and the APA, released the ‘Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement 2024’ and ‘Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport’.  They offer guidelines relating to current best practices for prevention, recognition, and management of concussion, all of which is underpinned by available empirical evidence.

In collaboration with the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), Dr David Hughes, Chief Medical Officer at the AIS, presented a special online SMA, ACSEP and APA members-only event, where he covered:

  • Evidence and key persisting issues regarding sport-related concussion in Australia.
  • Evidence regarding short and potential long-term consequences of sport-related concussion.
  • Challenges being faced by schools and community sport organisations in dealing appropriately with sport-related concussion.

The event aimed to help SMA, ACSEP or APA practitioners, clinicians or sports trainers gain a better understanding of what is known and what is not known regarding the health consequences of sport-related concussion, the need for clarity and consistency in concussion management in youth and community sport, and the resources available to support in the diagnosis and management of sport-related concussion.
