Nutrition plays an important role in preventing and managing musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, such as OA, sarcopenia, and chronic MSK pain. Education on pain management, including nutritional education, equips individuals with self-manage skills and fosters a sense of empowerment. However, allied health clinicians, including physiotherapists, are often uncertain as to what advice they may offer, operating within scope of practice.

Dr Emily Calton is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Nutritionist and Accredited Sports Dietitian with a PhD in Public Health. Emily is a senior lecturer and researcher at Curtin University, Western Australia and coordinates nutrition-related research at three hospitals. She teaches the latest advances in nutrition including evaluation of emerging diet trends such as intermittent fasting and the role of genes on nutrition requirements. Her research interests include investigating the impact of diet on inflammation, metabolism, body composition, and surgical outcomes in health and disease states and she supervises research students and hospital staff across a variety of clinical areas. Through her telehealth practice The Nutrition Doctor, she helps clients around Australia make changes to their diets to improve their diet, fuel their bodies for sports and exercise, manage health conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and fatty liver. Emily has been an invited presenter to deliver workshops to health professional bodies, not for profit organisations and Government Departments.
