Pelvic floor surgery. Where are we going?

Pelvic organ prolapse can affect the anterior (bladder), posterior (bowel) and/or apical (uterine or post-hysterectomy prolapse) vaginal sites. Dr Karantanis will discuss how the surgeon assesses pelvic floor prolapse and what surgical options are available. In particular how have surgical options changed in the light of the senate inquiry into transvaginal mesh implants.

Presenter

Dr Emmauel Karantanis is an obstetrician and urogynaecologist and conjoint Associate Professor at UNSW. He graduated from the UNSW and interned at St George Hospital in 1994. He undertook urogynaecology subspeciality training at St George and St Vincent's Hospitals and became a certified urogyneacologist in 2005. He is currently a consultant at St George Hospital and provides services in delivery suite, the pelvic floor unit and the severe birth injury clinic. He is involved in teaching medical students, midwives and doctors, and runs course on the prevention and repair of severe birth injuries. He is deputy chairman of the RANZCOG training program committee and a college examiner.
