With the Milano Cortina Winter Paralympics fast approaching in 2026 and Brisbane preparing to host the Paralympics in 2032, there’s never been a better time to start the conversation about Para sport. Physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to support people with disabilities in accessing and thriving in sport. From initial engagement through to elite performance and classification, physiotherapists can play a vital role in helping individuals participate in Para sport and, ultimately, achieve their sporting goals. This lecture will explore the wide-ranging benefits of sport participation for people with disabilities and highlight how physiotherapists can assist their clients — from finding local opportunities to representing Australia in the green and gold.
Tanja Spencer, APAM, leads initiatives to strengthen the role of allied health professionals in supporting individuals with disabilities to access and engage in Para sport. As a Physiotherapist, Tanja has dedicated her career to working with youth with physical disabilities. Her understanding of physical function and classification enables her to bridge the gap between clinical care and inclusive sport, and to advocate for greater integration between health services and the Paralympic movement.
