Neurodegenerative Diseases challenge us to deliver timely and best practice care to our patients as they navigate the disease course. Best practice respiratory alongside neurological physiotherapy can minimise distress and optimise quality of life.
This lecture will introduce assessment and management considerations across early, mid to late and end of life stage disease, with a focus on respiratory care in Motor Neurone Disease, Neuromuscular Disorders and similar, rare Neurodegenerative Diseases.
Dr Vivienne Travlos, APAM, is a clinical, academic and research physiotherapist focused on optimising health in families navigating life with disability, particularly in those who are wheelchair users and have a high risk of respiratory compromise. Vivienne enjoys working in community physiotherapy across the disability sector and in tertiary hospital respiratory and critical care. Her MSc (Management of Childhood Disability) (2003) involved youth with cerebral palsy GMFCS IV and explored the impact of decision making around manual handling issues on physical function and participation. Vivienne's PhD (2020) and smaller research studies explored respiratory care, health, wellbeing and the healthcare engagement with youth with neuromuscular and rare disease across Australia. Vivienne continues to be involved in training of physiotherapists, scientific committees and professional support of Allied Health in partnership with families living with disability."
