The evidence in aquatic exercise to improve muscular performance for older adults from endurance to power exercises will be reviewed. Clinical reasoning for exercise selection and progression will be considered. There will be a brief discussion on exercises for balance and cardiovascular conditioning. The session will focus on practical ideas for clinical implementation.

 

Presenter

Dr Sophie Heywood, APA Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, completed her PhD this year in the biomechanics of functional exercises in older adults in water compared to on land with and without knee osteoarthritis. Sophie trained at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Hydrotherapy and has a Masters in Sports Physiotherapy. Sophie is the Clinical Exercise Coordinator in the Physiotherapy Department at St Vincent’s Hospital and she also works at the Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre, Aquatic Physio Exercise Australia and the University of Melbourne.
