As primary contact practitioners, physiotherapists have a window of opportunity to positively influence childhood overweight and obesity. Using an interactive virtual classroom, this introductory session for physiotherapists will outline childhood overweight and obesity, suitable assessment tools, co-morbidities relevant for physiotherapists and physiotherapy management. The session will be presented by Dr Margarita Tsiros, and will form a foundation for a follow-up webinar that will be made available for participants seeking further information about diet and nutrition for this population.
Dr Margarita Tsiros is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy (Paediatrics) and researcher with the Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition and Activity based at the University of South Australia. Margarita has undertaken extensive research exploring how overweight and obesity influences children’s physical function and wellbeing, providing insight into suitable interventions. Margarita regularly engages with schools, community groups, state and Federal Policy-makers and the media to communicate key strategies for tackling childhood obesity. Margarita has received many accolades for her research and most recently was named a 2016 ‘AMP-Tomorrow Maker’.
