Unpacking the AIS / APA / SMA / ACSEP position statement on brain health and concussion from a practical, legal and clinical perspective.

 

Presenters

Dr David Munro, APAM, is a physiotherapist with nearly 30 year's experience who also holds a PhD from Monash University. He is an ImPACT accredited concussion trained practitioner working closely in the concussion space for over 10 years. In addition to being a Private Practitioner, David has been the Head Physiotherapist at The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) situated in Melbourne for the last 21 years and helped develop the first concussion protocol for circus artists used globally. David consults regularly with a number of Melbourne based sporting leagues and schools facilitating education sessions and concussion protocol development utilising the latest evidence-based research data.

Megan Hamilton, MACP, is an APA Research Physiotherapist and the principal physiotherapist at Concussion Central, a neurological private practice focused on management of concussion and vestibular conditions. Megan was a founding member of the Epworth concussion Clinic and has completed her master’s degree by research in traumatic brain injury.

Shreya McLeod, MACP, is an APA Titled Sports & Exercise and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with more than 15 years' experience treating national and international athletes. Shreya is currently completing her PhD at The University of Newcastle, New South Wales, in the identification of concussion in women's Rugby League. She has a research interest in injury risk reduction, particularly in female contact and collision sports. She is a lecturer and Interim Course Coordinator of the Masters of Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy program at Australian Catholic University.          

Dr Felix Leung, APAM, is a lecturer in Physiotherapy at Griffith University. He is a clinical and research physiotherapist with an area of expertise in sports-related concussion. Felix's research focuses on assessment of the sensorimotor system and how physiotherapy can be integrated into the management of athletes following a concussion. He has presented nationally and internationally, and his research has been used to inform clinical practice guidelines and injury management protocols. Felix is an experienced clinician and currently leads a sports injury screening clinic in South Brisbane and works with high school athletes and representative-level rugby union teams.

Nicola Mepstead, MACP, is a dual titled Sports & Exercise and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. She is the National SPEX Committee Chairperson and was the APA representative on the AIS Concussion & Brain Health Position Statement working party. Nicola has worked extensively in elite sport, including her current role with Tennis Australia as a Tournament Physiotherapist and within the National Talent Program. She has held roles as a Senior Physiotherapist at Cricket NSW, Cricket Australia and the WBBL Sydney Sixers. She has taken that knowledge of high-performance sport and has been the Project Lead in developing Physical Literacy programs for the NSW Office of Sport, and previously for Snow Sports Australia, which help developing athletes on their pathway to semi-professional or professional status. In her earlier career, Nicola worked across a variety of High-Performance teams, including NSW Gymnastics, Athletics Australia, Hockey NSW and Youth Australian teams. She spent many years working with amateur Rugby Union and Rugby League clubs, and has developed a wide-reaching repertoire of sports injury management for athletes of all categories and capabilities.
