  • Overview

Trans and gender diverse people are less likely to access appropriate healthcare due to negative experiences of assumptions, judgement and feeling unsafe. This session will introduce terminology for LGBTQI+ identities and explore practical advice for sensitive consultations and conversations in the clinical setting. With questions welcomed, this is a session to build therapists' confidence and understanding of trans inclusive practice

Presenters

Bronte Scott (she/her), APAM, is a senior physiotherapist and student facilitator at Westmead Hospital NSW working in the acute inpatient setting, and an APA Cardiorespiratory National Group member. As a lesbian woman of faith, Bronte has lived experience of the exclusion too often encountered by the LGBTQIA+ community. Bronte has partnered with Equality Australia and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras to oppose harmful legislation, and advocated in national media for LGBTQIA+ representation and rights.  She is passionate about creating safe spaces for both queer and straight physiotherapists to navigate the complexities of sexual diversity, and advocating for the needs of LGBTQIA+ people in accessing physiotherapy. Bronte is a part of the APA LGBTQIA+ Advisory Panel.

Cassandra Mangos (she/her), APAM, is a physiotherapist and clinical educator at Advance Rehab Centre in Sydney, and a member of the APA Neurology National Group. She identifies as queer, and for many years has advocated for inclusive practice in healthcare for trans and gender-diverse people. As a student, she worked alongside the University of Sydney to ensure the physiotherapy curriculum included education on gender diversity, a passion which grew and evolved while working in both inpatient and community settings. She chairs the Diversity Committee at her workplace, and believes that education on trans-inclusive practice is foundational to ensuring equal access to healthcare and outcomes for gender-diverse people.
