  • Overview

Mental health first aid training empowers individuals to educate others about mental health, reduce stigma and promote early intervention and support for people experiencing mental health problems.

Despite the high prevalence of mental illness in our community many health professionals are not equipped to confidently and skilfully support an individual who is becoming unwell, in distress or in crisis.

This introductory lecture will introduce the benefits of becoming trained in mental health first aid in order to deliver care that is more compassionate, mental health aware and to be able to start a conversation with those who are experiencing mental health problems whilst staying in their scope of practice.

Presenter

Irene Ais, APAM, is a Naarm based Integrative Physiotherapist specialising in chronic illness and mental health focused care. She is passionate about supporting people by empowering not just how they move but their capacity to embodying their whole selves. She has spent 20 years working in Physiotherapy and her clinical work focuses on the support of invisible chronic illness; particularly chronic pain, fatigue, hypermobility and providing body-based support for those living with trauma. Irene's approach is inclusive, respectful and compassionate.

She promotes a ‘we can't do it alone' message which acknowledges the environmental, systemic and intersectional factors that impact individual health experiences. This leads her to co create unique, person-informed programs which support the individual needs and desires of people she works with. Irene is passionate about psychologically informed practice and is the Victorian chair of the mental health physiotherapy group for the Australian Physiotherapy Association. She is a co-founder of Limbr, providing clinical education for health professionals and The Bridge Yoga School. Irene draws from 15 years working as a yoga facilitator/therapist and mental health/clinical educator which has taken her work across Australia and internationally.
